As the Director of Nutrition Services for the UCSD Cancer Prevention and Control Program, Ms. Newman manages the dietary intervention and assessment components for a number of clinical trials. The largest of these studies was the Women's Healthy Eating & Living (WHEL) Study, which has been studying the effects of diet on recurrence from breast cancer in 3,100 women in four states (California, Arizona, Texas, and Oregon). Ms. Newman developed the cooking class curriculum and recipes for the WHEL Study, which have now evolved into the Healing Foods Kitchen classes offered several times each month at the Cancer Center.
Ms. Newman works closely with the Cancer Prevention and Control editor in the development of intervention materials for the various studies. Ms. Newman also has primary responsibility for the hiring, training, and quality assurance for the dietary counseling and assessment staff of the Cancer Center's Nutrition Services Shared Resource.
Under Ms. Newman's guidance, UCSD has developed one of the most comprehensive dietary supplement databases in the country.
Ms. Newman is a Registered Dietitian with a Master of Science degree from San Diego State University, who has specialized in women's nutrition for more than 30 years, including an active role in setting statewide practice guidelines for nutritional care of women in California. She has acquired diverse work experience in community-based nutrition research studies and has functioned as a research dietitian and later as an independent investigator in behavioral intervention projects targeting various age and ethnic groups.
Ms. Newman has been a member of the voluntary faculty at the UCSD School of Medicine since 1984, and is currently an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. Ms. Newman has been active in the local American Cancer Society (ACS), serving on the Board of the ACS Border Region for several years and as Chair, Nutrition and Physical Activity Initiative Team during 2001-2. She was also a member of the California Division of ACS, Wellness Team (FY 2008), and she continues to participate as a speaker/facilitator in the ACS “I Can Cope” program.
Ms. Newman also regularly provides educational programs on nutrition-related topics to the UCSD community and the general public, and she has been a guest instructor at nearby Rancho La Puerta Spa in Tecate, Mexico, for more than 20 years.
