As a colorectal surgeon, Dr. Ramamoorthy's main clinical and research interest is in anal and colorectal neoplasms. Specifically, her ongoing research focuses on identifying molecular markers in the resection margins of transanally excised early rectal cancers to determine risk on recurrence.
Currently, she is looking at the role of microsatellite instability in squamous cell anal cancers. Squamous cell cancer of the anus is on the rise in the United States, particularly in the HIV/HPV positive population. Microsatellite instabilty is known to occur in up to 15-30% of HPV related cancers such as head and neck and cervical cancer, but its prevalence in anal cancer has never been determined.
