Expression of N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc)is associated with an intense immunologic reaction in humans, and is not normally expressed in adults. Neu5Gc expression was recently demonstrated at high frequency in homogenates of breast cancers. Dr. Muchmore has purified an antibody highly specific for cells that express Neu5Gc to determine the specificity and frequency of expression, and has refined its use in flash-frozen and paraffin-fixed breast cancer tissue sections to determine which cells express Neu5Gc.
