Diseases/Research Topics
Antisense technology, Apoptosis, Autoimmune Disease, Leukemia, Leukemias and Lymphoma, Lymphoma

Dr. Broome has a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from MIT and a M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania. After finishing a residency in Clinical Pathology and a fellowship in Hematopathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, She became certified in Clinical Pathology with a specialty certification in Hematology from the American Board of Pathology. She joined the faculty at the University of California, San Diego in 1991, and she is Director of the Hematology and Rheumatology Laboratories at the UCSD Medical Center.

Her research has focused on the regulation of lymphocyte and leukemia cell apoptosis. Current projects include determining the effect of bcl-x antisense on the growth of leukemia cells and the generation of immune responses. Her previous work demonstrated that the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-x decreases but Bcl-2 remains unchanged in activated lymphocytes starved of IL-2. Also, her work has shown that bcl-x antisense acts synergistically with glucocorticoids to induce leukemia cell apoptosis.
