Services to academic partners

  • Consultation on culturally appropriate methods in all phases of the research process (e.g., design, data collection, analysis, interpretation of results).
  • Community-based cancer education and outreach.
  • Recruitment and outreach for communities of color and other populations.
  • Translation and cultural adaptation of research documents and materials.

Examples of services provided

  • Community health workers conduct outreach to increase recruitment of under-represented ethnic groups into cancer research projects.
  • Assist investigators in identifying and developing culturally appropriate measurement tools and intervention materials.
  • Consultation and staffing to design and implement data collection including focus group discussions, telephone interviews, paper and pencil questionnaires.
  • Prepare and send reminder letters and emails to physicians to enroll diverse patient populations into clinical trials and studies.
  • Translation and adaptation of research forms and study materials into Spanish.
  • Support in the design of procedures to strengthen recruitment and retention into research studies of underrepresented ethnic study participants.
  • Consultation and support in the design and implementation of community-based participatory research.
  • Identification of community organizations or programs to forge collaborations with academic research teams.
  • Community-based cancer prevention education training utilizing community health educators.
  • Cancer screening services provided at health fair events servicing ethnic and underserved communities.

  • Consultation on research strategies, outreach and recruitment for racially and ethnically diverse participants in research studies.
  • Strengthened ties with the leadership of UCSD Cancer Center Specialized Cancer Units such as the Clinical Trials Office, the Patient and Family Support Services, and the Biorepository program.
  • Translations for research projects including consent forms, flyers, training materials, questionnaires and other survey instruments.

Previous community events and health fairs

  • San Diego Dia de la Mujer Latina Health Fair events held during October 2008, May 2009, and November 2009.  Services provided included free mammograms for eligible women. See Dia de la Mujer Latina website at: http://www.diadelamujerlatina.org/ 
  • Participation in a “Relay for Life” event organized by the American Cancer Society at Lincoln High School in Southeast San Diego, July, 2009.  Staff provided cancer educational materials for participants. See Relay for Life website at: http://www.relayforlife.org/relay/
  • Pacific Islander Festival Association (PIFA) festival cancer health information booth during September, 2009.  Comprehensive SDSU/UCSD Cancer Center Partnership staff and Post-Doctoral Residents provided cancer education materials, and informational materials regarding the impact of cancer on Asian and Pacific Islander communities.
