ASL Fellows:

Create a student-led health seminar for the Deaf community with the assistance of the project manager, Deaf Community Services, the Pre-Health Professional Club.

Select a topic, recruit a speaker who is an authority on the topic, and then assist with the mechanics of producing the seminar.

  • Present part of each seminar using their expanding ASL skills.

2003- This year medical students decided to focus on cancer prevention and its relationship with nutrition.

October 16, 2003: Sarah Stotz, a registered dietician, gave a presentation on “What’s good and what’s bad about everyday foods,” stressing the importance of eating high fiber, low-fat foods. About 60 members of the Deaf community attended the event at Deaf Community Services’ community room and enjoyed a dinner catered by Feast on This!

November 10, 2003: Sarah Stotz gave a follow-up educational presentation on “Hot Topics in Nutrition and Health,” outlining four key principles: 1.) The food pyramid; 2.) vitamin and nutrition supplementation; 3.) ways to lose weight; and 4.) the benefits of fiber. To gain experience speaking in ASL before an audience, the ASL Medical Fellows showed examples of similar foods with widely different fiber levels and how to read the nutrient labels on each product.
