Deaf Culture Training Program

The ASL fellows learn first-hand about Deaf Culture through:

1. Deaf Patient Simulations
2. Enrolling in an American Sign Language Course
3. Spending a month at Gallaudet University, the only liberal-arts college for the Deaf
4. Participating in Deaf Events
5. Co-leading an ASL Club for pre-health professional undergraduates
6. Creating a health education program for, or related to, the Deaf community

Eligibility

• Must be an incoming first year UC San Diego medical student (Second year students may take this 3 quarter elective on a space available basis)
• Have strong linguistic skills
• Have demonstrated a commitment to community service among disadvantaged or medically underserved communities
• Are highly motivated to improve the Deaf community’s access to health information and health care
• Strong ability to interact with people across cultures

How to Apply

Upon acceptance to UC San Diego, you will be mailed a brochure. Complete the brochure submit it to the address below OR contact Dr. Sadler directly with your intrest.
