Family Cancer Genetics Program

The Family Cancer Genetics Program offers patients with a family history of cancer an opportunity to learn about their inherited risks for cancer. We conduct assessments of family and personal cancer histories, identify appropriate genetic testing options, arrange testing, and interpret results. We also provide recommendations to patients and their physicians for strategies for cancer surveillance and cancer prevention.

We work closely with other medical professionals at UCSD to provide patients with up-to-date information about inherited cancer risks, available genetic testing, and management options for individuals known to be at a high risk of developing cancer due to genetic predisposition.

We offers the following services to patients:

  • An in-depth review of personal and family histories of cancer.  A family tree is constructed to identify patterns that suggest the presence of an inherited susceptibility to cancer in family members. This includes a determination as to whether or not the pattern of cancers in the family fits with a known hereditary cancer syndrome.
  • An assessment of a patient’s personal risk of developing cancer, and the identification of appropriate genetic testing options.
  • Personalized counseling to help decision making about genetic testing. This counseling will include discussions about issues related to the future risk of developing cancer, the impact of genetic test results on cancer surveillance and prevention strategies, the emotional impact of genetic information on the patient and other family members, and concerns about genetic privacy.
  • Assistance in developing optimal strategies for the management of cancer risks based on the family history assessment and/or genetic test results..
