Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program
The joint UC San Diego / Sharp HealthCare program is the largest blood and marrow transplant (BMT) program in San Diego, one of the largest in California, and a national leader in physician expertise and state-of-the-art treatment. Studies have shown that the best patient outcomes occur in centers that perform a high volume of specific medical procedures, such as BMT.
- Lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease
- Acute and chronic leukemia
- Multiple myeloma
- Myelodysplastic syndrome
- Aplastic anemia
- Testicular cancer
Volume and Outcomes
Since 1989, we have performed more than 2,000 transplants. Data from our transplants are reported to the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) for entry into the Stem Cell Therapeutics Outcomes Database (SCTOD).
We treat patients with currently available standard-of-care therapies, as well as innovative chemotherapy agents, radiation therapy techniques and novel stem cell transplantation methods, including:
- Reduced intensity treatment, which administers a lower dose of chemotherapy and radiation
- Autologous transplants
- Allogeneic transplants – related and unrelated
- Cord blood and haploindentical stem cell transplant

Accreditation and Credentials
The UC San Diego / Sharp Blood and Marrow Transplant Program is one of 16 charter members of the prestigious Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). With about 20 transplant center members, this is the premier BMT clinical trials group in the world. The majority of BMT procedures performed in the U.S. are by centers who are members of BMT CTN.
