Special events have long been a tradition at the Moores Cancer Center. Some of these events have raised millions of dollars to benefit the work of the center, others are educational opportunities, and some are to thank our patients and their families.

One of San Diego’s premier gala events returns for its 33rd anniversary. The UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center Spark Gala will be on Saturday, April 26, 2014. The evening includes cocktails, dinner, dancing and entertainment led by a special celebrity guest. All proceeds benefit the Hospital for Cancer Care at Jacobs Medical Center. Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

Don’t be late! The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party begins at 12:00 PM at Mandell-Weiss Eastgate Park, a part of the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla. Activities include the Mad Hatter’s Croquet Tournament, a silent auction, and hat decorating, followed by high tea served by the Queen of Hearts and her deck of cards. Local band, Cathouse Thursday, will provide musical entertainment. This event support the Moores Cancer Center Healing Foods Kitchen program. Nineteen years ago Brian Schultz’s dearest friends founded The Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic to carry on his legacy after his sudden and brief battle with cancer at age 27. Every year this tournament gives participants the opportunity to share fond memories of Brian while creating new friendships and unforgettable memories, in addition to raising funds to stop this deadly disease.

The Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational has an international reputation featuring surfing legends with community leaders, scientists and national celebrities to surf for a cure.

This is the second year that the two-day cycling fundraiser will take place in San Diego. Pedal the Cause’s mission is to provide funding for the best cancer research ideas at San Diego's three National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers - the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and Salk Institute of Biological Studies. Collaborations between these complementary cancer centers create greater opportunities to fast-track research from the bench to the bedside.

The 21st Annual Bruce Gorder UCSD 5K Walk for Melanoma raises awareness and funds for melanoma research at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center and has provided more than $1.3 million to date. The walk is in memory of Bruce Brunner Gorder who passed away on October 11, 1992 from Melanoma at age 37. Hope lives on in the many families and friends who support their loved ones in the continuing fight against melanoma. Complimentary skin cancer screenings are offered to all registered participants to help promote the importance of early detection. For more information, see Gorder Walk.
