Wayne A. Beach (Ph.D., University of Utah) is Professor in the School of Communication at San Diego State University, and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Surgery at UCSD.His research and teaching are grounded in the close analysis of naturally occurring recordings and transcriptions of everyday life activities.

Professor Beach is collaborating with Dr. Joanne Mortimer on a recently funded NCI grant focusing on communication between cancer patients and oncologists at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. Basic research on communication and cancer promotes improved interactional practices for treating, diagnosing, and managing cancer care.

He has also recently completed a long-term investigation of how families talk through cancer on the telephone, from diagnosis through death of a loved one -- the first natural history of a family's cancer journey -- culminating in a lengthy book entitled A Natural History of Family Cancer: Interactional Resources for Managing Illness.

He is currently editing Handbook of Patient-Provider Interactions: Raising and Responding to Concerns about Life, Illness, & Disease -- a compilation of over 50 seminal studies advancing understandings of communication during medical interviews and related clinical encounters.
