Cancer Prevention, Cancer Treatment, Gene Delivery
Dr. Waters has established a novel gene delivery system for single-stranded DNA to tissue culture cells. The system is expected to outperform currently used methods in its ability to deliver genomic-size single-stranded DNA molecules. This form of DNA is known to target genes in their native site, rather than randomly insert the gene into an unpredictable site.
She and her colleagues have broadened the system for application in cancer treatment in colon cancer animal models, and in DNA delivery designed to prevent cancer. It is first being customized for preferential delivery to tumors. The pursuit of cancer prevention adds to the novelty of their work.
