Dr. Myers current research focuses on 1) The process of adolescent smoking cessation and 2) Cross-cultural influences on youth tobacco use initiation and progression. These areas of research have been funded by grants from the California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program.
Despite increased attention to adolescent smoking, little is known regarding characteristics of adolescent smoking cessation efforts. To examine this issue Dr. Myers recently completed an initial study designed to develop and evaluate measures of adolescent smoking cessation motives and methods and explore predictors of cessation efforts and outcomes.
In order to increase understanding regarding factors that influence smoking behaviors among ethnic minority populations in the United States, Dr. Myers is examining factors that influence the initiation and progression of cigarette smoking among Chinese and Korean-American college students. In addition to traditional risk factors, this study examines cultural and genetic influences on smoking initiation and progression.
