As a gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Alvarez is primarily interested in studying ovarian, cervical and endometrial cancer. He is currently involved in laboratory studies of ovarian cancer initiating cells and ovarian cancer chemotherapeutic resistance. He will apply whole genome scale shRNA library screening techniques to ovarian cancer cell lines to find and interrogate chemotherapy resistance pathways.
In addition, Dr. Alvarez designs and writes current biologically-targeted phase II clinical trials with translational components. He is focused upon recruiting patients to active cancer center clinical trials and in procuring cancer specimens for research purposes. This allows for the translation of laboratory findings to the clinic, and back to the bench.
