Scott A Irwin, MD, PhD is the Medical Director of Palliative Care Psychiatry at San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care (SDHPC), a teaching affiliate of the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine (UCSD). In this role, he:

• Coordinates and provides consultative psychiatric services for SDHPC patients and families

• Educates SDHPC faculty, palliative medicine fellows, clinical staff, and visitors; family medicine and internal medicine residents from various San Diego programs; and coordinates the UCSD Psychiatry Resident PGY-II and UCSD Combined Family Practice/Psychiatry PGY-IV rotations at SDHPC, as well as PGY-III and PGY-IV electives

• Investigates better assessments and treatments for depression and delirium, as well as other mental health issues, to improve outcomes for those with advanced, life-threatening illnesses

Dr. Irwin received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychobiology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1994. He received a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2000.

For his doctoral thesis, Scott conducted research in the area of nervous system plasticity, and how learning, experience, and the environment interact with the biology of the brain. Scott graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School, Urbana-Champaign in 2002.

In 2006, he completed a psychiatry residency at UCSD as chief resident of Outpatient Psychiatric Services as well as a two year elective in hospice and palliative care. Dr. Irwin currently holds appointments as faculty for the Center of Palliative Studies at SDHPC and as a clinical instructor in the Department of Psychiatry, UCSD School of Medicine.
