Mitchell Kronenberg and his colleagues are studying the T cell response to glycolipid antigens. One of these, alpha-galactosyl ceramide (aGC) was developed originally by the Kirin Pharmaceutical corporation as an anti-cancer agent, and it has been studied in three clinical trials. Recently, they and others have identified new glycolipid antigens from bacteria that activate some T cells. aGC may be too strong a stimulus, causing T cell anergy. They have reason to believe that some of the new antigens they have identified may be more effective at stimulating T cell responses.

They are interested in testing these glycolipids for their ability to activate NKT cells following multiple injections, and for their ability to act as adjuvants in anti-tumor and other responses.
