Biostatistics
Dr. Natarajan conducts methodological research in biostatistics, primarily in the area of survival analysis. She is interested in modeling survival distributions in research situations where there are time dependent effects and wherein the proportional hazards model is not applicable. She is also involved in developing Markov models for estimating mutation rates in cancer cell lines.
Dr. Natarajan has provided statistical consultation for many members of the Cancer center, including Drs. John Pierce , Cheryl Rock and Hillary Klonoff-Cohen. Dr. Natarajan is on the team of investigators involved in the Women’s Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) study, a randomised clinical trial in which the effects of a diet rich in fiber and vegetables and low in fat on breast cancer recurrence are being studied. In addition, Dr. Natarajan is collaborating with Dr. Cheryl Rock in a study to assess the effects of a diet high in carotenoids on reversing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Further, Dr. Natarajan developed appropriate statistical models to enable the estimation of mutation rates for a colorectal cancer cell line, under investigation by Dr. C. Gasche (and Dr. R. Boland).
Dr. Natarajan’s role in these projects has been to provide statistical advice on design and analysis issues, assist in preparing grant submissions, perform statistical analyses and develop statistical methodology where needed.
Key Words: statistical methodology, mutation rates, survival analysis.
