Diseases/Research Topics
Cancer, Chemotherapy, Lung Cancer, Non-smoker

Dr. Bazhenova's clinical practice concentrates on lung cancer patients, particularly as this relates to females and non-smokers. She also sees patients with thymoma, pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma. She serves as a primary investigator on over 20 clinical trials thus bringing novel most promising therapies to her patients before their approval. The majority of her time is spent in the clinic, taking care of patients and doing clinical research. Dr. Bazhenova has vast experience in clinical trial management, design and implementation.

Dr. Bazhenova leads the lung cancer team at UCSD and is a big proponent of multidisciplinary approach to lung cancer that involves collaborative decisions between the thoracic surgeon, radiation oncologist, pulmonologist and medical oncologist. She leads a weekly tumor board.

Her main research interest is a study of circulating tumor cells. Those are epithelial cells that are felt to be released by the tumor and are found in the peripheral circulation. Dr. Bazhenova collaborates with The Scripps Research Institute, which is developing a new device that is able to count and further evaluate those cells. This collaborative work has been presented at major society meetings and is funded by the NIH.

Dr. Bazhenova's secondary research interest includes supportive care, cancer-related fatigue and management of chemotherapy toxicities.

Before joining Moores UCSD Cancer Center, she worked on SHP-1 protein and its role in MDS progression and on the very rare variant of amyloidosis called Finnish familial amyloidodid of gelsolin type.
