My laboratory is primarily interested in identifying key genes involved in brain development. We use a combination of positional cloning of human disease genes and mouse genes derived from ENU mutagenesis. These diseases are primarily focused on disorders of neuronal migration, differentiation, and connectivity that result in mental retardation and epilepsy. Additionally, we are working to selectively target some genes in the mouse involved in signal transduction that, when mutated, leads to mental retardation in humans. Finally, we seek to understand the mechanism of disease by studying the function of these genes in model systems using genetic, cell-biological and biochemical approaches.
