John P. Elder, Ph.D., M.P.H, is Program Leader for Reducing Cancer Disparities. He is Professor of Health Promotion at San Diego State University Graduate School of Public, and Adjunct Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine at UCSD.

He received his Bachelors degree from the University of Nebraska, the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from West Virginia University and an MPH from Boston University in international health.

He currently serves as Principal Investigator of two NIH funded research projects, including an obesity prevention program for Hispanic families and their elementary school children, and another for children attending San Diego-area recreation centers.

He is also Principal Investigator and Director of the CDC-funded San Diego Prevention Research Center, “Familias Activas y Sanas”, and is Co-Principal Investigator of the national Hispanic Community Health Study, funded by NHLBI.

Elder has 260 publications to his credit. He and Dr. John Pierce co-direct the PhD program in health behavior sponsored jointly by UCSD and SDSU.
