Dr. de Beyer’s research interest is in tobacco control, with a particular focus on policies to reduce tobacco use in low and middle-income countries. She has worked with many local researchers, collaborating to build developing country policy-relevant research and analytic capacity. As an economist, her focus is particularly on economics issues - especially price as a key determinant of tobacco product use. She is also particularly interested in the association between poverty and tobacco use, with an emphasis on three main aspects:
(1) whether, and the extent to which, low income is associated with greater prevalence of tobacco use and whether policies and interventions can be tailored and targeted to be more effective in discouraging tobacco use among low income people;
(2) the impoverishing effects of tobacco use, through diverting scarce disposable income away from basic needs and other goods; and
(3) the impoverishing effect of higher risk of illness and early death among smokers.
