Dr. Cottam is the director of the Medicinal Chemistry Core and is engaged in drug discovery efforts to design and synthesize compounds as chemotherapeutic agents. Compounds include those used to enhance killing of cancer cells, as well as agents that can protect normal cells from unwanted cell death as a consequence of various cancer treatments. The Medicinal Chemistry Core has been established as a service to Cancer Center researchers to help them acquire compounds of research interest that are otherwise difficult or impossible to obtain. These may be prepared in house or acquired, if feasible, from commercial or other sources.
