Research Interests: Because epidemiological studies have shown a link between nutritional factors and risk and progression of cancer, clinical nutritionist Dr. Cheryl Rock is examining whether changes in nutritional factors following a diagnosis of cancer will result in changes in biochemical factors, hormones, and risk for recurrence and survival. In her nutrition laboratory, Dr. Rock measures nutrients and bioactive food components in blood and tissue samples from individuals in clinical studies, and Dr. Rock leads the Nutrition Shared Resource of the Moores UCSD Cancer Center.
Obesity is linked to risk for numerous diseases, including cancer, so Dr. Rock is conducting research to identify effective methods of weight control, involving changes in diet and physical activity, for healthy individuals who need to lose weight and also breast cancer survivors.
Dr. Cheryl Rock and Dr. John Pierce collaborate in coordinating the multi-center, 8-year project known as the Women's Healthy Eating and Living Study (WHEL). Its objective is to find out whether a healthier diet in combination with lengthy, personalized follow-up phone counseling can improve breast cancer survival rates.
