Research Projects

All UCSD medical students must complete an Independent Study Project (ISP) as a graduation requirement. The ASL Fellows are encouraged to conduct their ISP on a project with Deaf community. Below are a list of the students’ ISP Projects and topics:

Norming and Validating the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) Instrument

The Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) is a survey that allows a physician to understand what the patients believes controls his or her health; using this information, the physician can construct a more appropriate treatment plan. In this project Waheeda Samady transliterated the MHLC into American Sign Language (ASL) and documented the transliteration process. Ninad Athale will work on validating and norming the MHLC.

EVALUATION OF CANCER EDUCATION VIDEOS IN ASL

Regnia Wang is testing the efficacy of film in disseminating cervical cancer information to increase awareness of this cancer within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community. It will evaluate the degree to which the video can increase women’s knowledge of cervical cancer and motivate women who were not current concerning recommended screening practices to become current.
