STEPS YOU CAN TAKE - Why the Tomato?

Several studies now link the consumption of tomatoes and tomato products with a reduction in risk of the development of several forms of cancer. Laboratory findings also suggest that the presence of lycopene, a carotenoid found most abundantly in the U.S. diet in tomato products, may be among the constituents in tomatoes that contribute to the reduction in cancer risk. However, the biological effects are greater when tomatoes (compared with lycopene alone) are ingested, suggesting that tomato's combined ingredients provide the best value-added cancer prevention effects.
