Deaf Culture Training Program
The ASL fellows learn first-hand about Deaf Culture through:
- Deaf Patient Simulations (make this a link)
- Enrolling in an American Sign Language Course
- Spending a month at Gallaudet University, the only liberal-arts college for the Deaf (link to http://clast.gallaudet.edu/summer/)
- Participating in Deaf Events (link to deaf cultural activities)
- Co-leading an ASL Club for pre-health professional undergraduates (link to Pre-health professional club for the Deaf PHD)
- Creating a health education program for, or related to, the Deaf community (link to “Presentations to the Deaf Community”)

Eligibility:
- Must be an incoming first year UCSD medical student (Second year students may take this 3 quarter elective on a space available basis).
- Have strong linguistic skills
- Have demonstrated a commitment to community service among disadvantaged or medically underserved communities
- Are highly motivated to improve the Deaf community’s access to health information and health care
- Strong ability to interact with people across cultures
How to Apply:
Upon acceptance to UCSD, you will be mailed a brochure. Complete the brochure submit it to the address below OR contact Dr. Sadler directly with your intrest.
