Simulated Interactions with Deaf Patients
Each quarter ASL Fellows conduct patient simulations on a cancer-related topic with a Deaf patient. The topics for the patient simulations are as follows:
- Breast Cancer
- Testicular Cancer
- Prostate Cancer
- Cervical Cancer
- Skin Cancer
- Family Cancer Syndrome
ASL Fellows are videotaped and provided feedback based on:
- ASL Skills
- Interviewing skills
- Appropriate Deaf Cultural behaviors
- Use of eye contact
- Use of facial expressions
- Ability to understand the patients’ signs
- Turn-taking skills
- Appropriate responses to the patient’s concerns and question
