Simulated Interactions with Deaf Patients

Each quarter ASL Fellows conduct patient simulations on a cancer-related topic with a Deaf patient. The topics for the patient simulations are as follows:

  1. Breast Cancer
  2. Testicular Cancer
  3. Prostate Cancer
  4. Cervical Cancer
  5. Skin Cancer
  6. Family Cancer Syndrome

ASL Fellows are videotaped and provided feedback based on:

  1. ASL Skills
  2. Interviewing skills
  3. Appropriate Deaf Cultural behaviors
  4. Use of eye contact
  5. Use of facial expressions
  6. Ability to understand the patients’ signs
  7. Turn-taking skills
  8. Appropriate responses to the patient’s concerns and question
