- The CURE Program
What is CURE?
- The CURE Program - Continuing Umbrella of Research Experience -
is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.
- The CURE Program was implemented to engage the scientific curiosity
and promote the potential cancer research careers of promising young
high school and undergraduate students from underserved populations.
- The Moores UCSD Cancer Center has been selected to participate in
this program because of its strong community outreach and research
capabilities.
- We believe that reducing the disproportionate burden of cancer incidence
and mortality in many ethnic and racial groups will depend substantially
on the presence of culturally sensitive, well-trained scientists from
these populations.
Our CURE Program
- The Moores UCSD Cancer Center selects 13 students each spring to
participate in the CURE Program.
- To be eligible, students must be at least 18 years old and either
in college or entering college. Selection is based upon the students'
academic performance in their science classes, interest in exploring
a career in health or science, recommendations from teachers, and
willingness to commit to a training program and multi-year follow-up
of academic and career progress.
- Students will receive training in laboratory skills and safety,
goal setting, time management, and academic and career guidance.
- Each student will be mentored by a scientist from the Moores UCSD
Cancer Center.
