PEOPLE - Associate Director for Administration

Ira S. Goodman

Mr. Goodman assists the Center Director and his Senior Leadership in implementing all phases of strategic planning and policy implementation. In addition to his participation as a decision-making member of the senior team, the Associate Director for Administration (ADA) manages all aspects of the Center’s business functions. He also helps the Center Director promote the Center’s integrated mission to the larger healthcare and lay community of San Diego and its surrounding region. In this capacity, Mr. Goodman has Center-wide responsibility for business and finance; grants management; human resources administration; facilities and shared resources management; information technology and systems, planning, communications and development; member and community relations, and liaison with local, state and national organizations associated with the fight against cancer.

Mr. Goodman brings to the position a wealth of knowledge including 17 years’ experience as administrative director of an NCI-designated matrix comprehensive cancer center.  He also has held positions as central administration director of grants and contracts administration; administrator of the department of Psychiatry, administrator of the department of Pathology and administrator of an NCI-designated Center for AIDS Research.  He has served on a number of institutional boards including the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), General Clinical Research Center Executive Advisory Committee, and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).  He has been an administrative consultant to NIH Study Sections and other educational / academic institutions. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Society of Research Administrators.  Mr. Goodman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry from Long Island University; a Master of Public Administration degree and a Master of Science in Clinical Management degree from New York University.
