California Smokers’ Helpline Offers
Free Support for Quitting Smoking
Each
year millions of people quit smoking for a day or longer during
the Great American Smokeout, this year scheduled for Thursday, November
20. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, this nationally recognized
event raises awareness and encourages tobacco users to take a step
toward quitting.
For
those wishing to quit tobacco, the California Smokers’ Helpline
offers motivational self-help materials, telephone counseling and
referrals to local tobacco cessation resources to assist in this
process. The Helpline is a free, statewide research-based tobacco-cessation
project funded by the California Department of Health Services through
Proposition 99, and operated through the University of California,
San Diego.
Research
shows that smokers are most successful in kicking the habit permanently
when they have planned ahead and have some means of support. Working
with the California Smokers' Helpline (1-800-NO-BUTTS) may double
an individual’s chances of quitting successfully.
Since
its inception at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD)
Cancer Center in 1992, the California Smokers’ Helpline has provided
service to more than 250,000 people statewide. Six languages are
represented: English, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin and
Cantonese, as well as a TDD line for the hearing impaired. These
services are available to any person living in California, age 14
and older (materials alone for those under the age of 14).
