The Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center is sponsoring a free public
lecture featuring Alan
R. Kristal, Dr.P.H., M.P.H., professor of epidemiology at
the University of Washington and associate head of the Cancer
Prevention Research Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer
Research Center, both in Seattle. The
talk – “Food and Fitness for Men’s Health: Prevention and
Adjunct Treatment of Prostate Cancer” – is scheduled for 6:30
p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the Hilton San Diego Resort on Mission
Bay, 1775 East Mission Bay Dr. A reception will precede the
lecture, at 5:30 p.m. Free parking is available. Kristal, who was named by the Cancer Center as the Spring 2004 Charmaine and Maurice Kaplan Distinguished Lecturer in Cancer Prevention, will discuss aspects of prostate cancer, its prevalence – even among men with low PSA – and the role of dietary factors that may both prevent prostate cancer and reduce the risk of developing aggressive disease after a prostate cancer diagnosis. He will talk about vegetables, obesity, energy, dietary fat, selenium, lycopene, dairy foods and calcium. His primary research interests are in nutritional epidemiology, including the relationship between diet and cancer, and implementation and evaluation of public health nutrition interventions. The
Charmaine and Maurice Kaplan Distinguished Lectureship in
Cancer Prevention was established at the Moores UCSD Cancer
Center by the Kaplans in 1997 to bring to the San Diego community
world-class lectures by leaders in the field of cancer prevention.
The Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center is one of just 38 centers in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation providing advanced patient care, conducting basic and clinical cancer research, and serving its community through outreach and education programs.
