News from the Digital Imaging Front The Cancer Center's Digital Imaging and Cell Microinjection Shared Resource welcomes Stephen McMullen, Staff Research Associate. Stephen is a recent graduate of UCLA, and is available to assist or train you on DeltaVision deconvolution microscopy, image analysis and photo-output Steve can be reached at Ext. 24187 or swmcmullen@ucsd.edu. Carolan Buckmaster, Staff Research Associate, continues to provide excellent service training for microinjection or immunofluorescence microscopy, and can be contacted at Ext. 48803 or cbuckmaster@ucsd.edu. | | This image was captured by William Biggs, Ph.D. of the Webster Cavenee, Ph.D. laboratory (Ludwig Institute) using the DeltaVision microscope. The 3-D perspective view was made by Dave Nadeau at SDSCC using NPACI Scalable Visualization Tools. The image shows the localization of a growth factor receptor and its ligand on the surface of a human cell. | The Cancer Center has provided funding to upgrade the Zeiss imaging system to real-time capability for fluorescence, phase/contrast and brightfield digital image capture with the purchase of a video capture card. According to the Resource Leader, James Feramisco, Ph.D., “We have enjoyed seeing the work of several users of this facility featured on the covers of recent journals in which their work was published.” Some of these include:Burger JA, Tsukada N, Burger M, Zvaifler NJ, Dell'Aquila M, Kipps TJ: Blood-derived "nurse-like" cells protect chronic lymphocytic leukemia B cells from spontaneous apoptosis via stromal-cell-derived factor-1. Blood 96:2655-2663, 2000Adams JW, Pagel AL, Means CK, Oksenberg D, Armstrong RC, and Brown JH: Cardiomyocyte Apoptosis Induced by Gq Signaling Is Mediated by Permeability Transition Pore Formation and Activation of the Mitochondrial Death Pathway. Circ. Res. 87:1180-1187, 2000Scully KM, Jacobson EM, Jepsen K, Lunyak V, Viadiu H, Carrière C, Rose DW, Hooshmand F, Aggarwal AK, Rosenfeld MG: Allosteric Effects of Pit-1 DNA Sites on Long-Term Repression in Cell Type Specification. Science 290:1127-1131, 2000 According to Dr. Faramisco, “The Kipps lab used the Hamamatsu camera and the attached Zeiss microscope, while the Brown and Rosenfeld labs used the DeltaVision deconvolution imaging system. For the Brown and Rosenfeld covers, 3-Dimensional perspective views were rendered by our colleagues Dave Nadeau, Alex DeCastro and Jon Genetti at the VisLab at SDSCC using NPACI Scalable Visualization Tools.” (Return to Top)
