The Future of Cancer Care: Jacobs Medical Center

As the region’s population grows and ages, a new state-of-the art facility is needed to meet the projected needs of the San Diego community. With 108 dedicated beds for cancer care, the new building will double our capacity to treat patients with every form of malignancy.

Coming in 2016: The Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care

Watch a video about the future of cancer care at UC San Diego Health System.

Jacobs Medical Center, currently under construction near Moores Cancer Center in La Jolla, will include four hospitals in one location: the existing Thornton Hospital and three new specialty hospitals. Floors 4-6 of the new building will be the Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care. (Learn more about Jacobs Medical Center, or about Pauline Foster's $7.5 million gift to the hospital.)

Bone marrow transplant patients will transition from Thornton Hospital to the new hospital, which will include the latest in technology for clinical care for cancer patients.

Moores Cancer Center will continue to house groundbreaking research and provide stellar outpatient care, including clinic appointments, patient support services, and resources such as the Healthy Eating Program.

Family-Centered Care in a Healing Environment

The Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care has been designed with significant input from cancer patients and their families to create a healing, supportive environment. It will include:

  • Comfortable sleep space for a family member in all patient rooms
  • Fitness area
  • Family consultation room
  • Patient resource center
  • Specialized air filtration system for the Bone Marrow Transplant unit, to allow patients with compromised immune systems to move freely within the entire unit, instead of being confined to their treatment room

The Hospital for Cancer Care will also promote the expansion of the UC San Diego Health System-Sharp Memorial Hospital Bone Marrow Transplant Program, which performs more than 135 transplants annually. This very successful partnership program has grown rapidly, and needs added hospital beds to accommodate the increasing demand in the region.

Synergy, Discovery, Innovation

The hospital's location, adjacent to Moores Cancer Center and neighboring partners in the biotechnology community of La Jolla, will enhance synergistic opportunities for the discovery and development of new cancer treatments. It will enable UC San Diego Health System to build upon its international reputation for translational, bench-to-bedside medicine – helping to usher in an era of personalized medicine.
